After Weeks of Demands, the Government Declares a National Disaster Due to Fires
In response to the magnitude of the forest fires and growing pressure, the Government has officially declared a national disaster, facilitating the arrival of international aid.
President Luis Arce officially declared a national disaster due to the forest fires that have devastated eastern Bolivia. This decision comes after weeks of requests from local authorities, organizations, and the public, who were calling for greater intervention to tackle the environmental emergency that has already consumed more than 7 million hectares of forest in Santa Cruz alone.
During a meeting with the acting governor of Santa Cruz, Mario Aguilera, and other departmental and municipal authorities, Arce signed Supreme Decree 5235, formalizing the national disaster declaration.
"We have approved this decree 5235, which is the declaration of national disasters, so that we can activate everything within our reach to confront these fires that have been concerning us, not just now but for the past three months," stated the president.
Upon his arrival in Santa Cruz, Arce was received by Aguilera, who had already declared the disaster at the departmental level in early September. Pressure increased in recent weeks, with social and political sectors demanding a national declaration to expedite the arrival of international aid and optimize resources to combat the fire.
The Minister of the Presidency, María Nela Prada, was responsible for reading the decree, which establishes immediate measures to mitigate the disaster. "National and territorial authorities will work together to protect the environment and ensure the safety of affected people," she explained.
The president emphasized that, although the declaration will allow the mobilization of more resources, the Government had already arranged international loans to address the situation. However, he mentioned that these resources are pending approval in the Plurinational Legislative Assembly and urged lawmakers to speed up the process.
